Start with the chapter, not a guidebook
For an NCERT Class 8 Science chapter test, the textbook is your starting point. Read the chapter headings, learning activities, diagrams, examples, and end-of-chapter questions before reaching for extra material.
This does not mean you should memorise every sentence. It means you should understand the language your teacher is likely to use when asking about the concept.
The four-pass routine
Pass one: map the chapter
Spend five minutes scanning the headings and diagrams. Write the chapter's main question in your own words. This gives your reading a purpose.
Pass two: understand small sections
Read two or three pages at a time. After each section, close the book and write a two-sentence explanation. Circle terms you cannot define yet.
Pass three: practise the textbook questions
Answer in a notebook without looking at the solution. Include keywords, units, labelled diagrams, and steps where they are needed. A complete answer is not always a long answer.
Pass four: test the weak points
Create a mini-test with definitions, one diagram, one “why” question, and one application question. You can also use Evater's practice flow to get a fresh set of questions and feedback.
How to revise diagrams
Look at a diagram for one minute, cover it, and redraw it. Label it from memory. Then compare your version with NCERT and correct only the missing or misplaced labels. Repeat the next day rather than redrawing it ten times in one sitting.
The night before the test
Review your one-page summary and mistake list. Revisit the definitions and diagrams you missed during practice. Pack your materials and sleep on time. A tired brain makes simple recall feel harder than it is.
A final checklist
- Can I explain the chapter's main idea in simple language?
- Can I define its important terms without copying?
- Can I redraw and label the key diagrams?
- Have I answered the in-text and end-of-chapter questions?
- Have I corrected mistakes from at least one timed mini-test?
If you can answer “yes” to most of these, your revision is doing the right job: showing you what to improve before the chapter test, not merely making your notebook look complete.
